Using In-Reach to Increase the Breadth of Outreach
CCISP partners with, and is a partner to, a diverse array of governmental and nongovernmental organizations with whom we share overlapping missions, such as: 1) making new discoveries in injury and violence prevention; 2) maximizing access to and equity in application of these new discoveries; 3) promoting scale up of known effective prevention strategies; and 4) decreasing disparities in injury and violence outcomes.
Dart Center in the School of Journalism addresses violence and trauma with the aim of improving local, regional and global news coverage of violence and violence-related events. The Center conducts research and training on the psychological impact and ethics related to the journalistic reporting of traumatic events and maintains a related research database of scholarship on trauma journalism.
Columbia Law School Conducts scholarship on the equity, social justice and human rights, policing, violence and civil liberties, second amendment and gun rights and collaborates on related publications and SURGE activities.
Injury Free is a coalition of more than 40 trauma centers working to reduce the impact of injury and violence on children living in the communities they serve. Injury free sponsors Injury Prevention Day and holds an annual conference with abstract and poster presentations that is open to members and nonmembers who share their mission of decreasing preventable injuries to children.
Media and Social Change Lab at TC (MASCLab) is a hub for multimodal and digital scholarship at Teachers College, Columbia University. Several injury and violence topics have been explored through the production of (Re)Search for Solutions podcasts.
Neurotrauma and Repair Laboratory - This Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science laboratory at Columbia University studies the biomechanics of brain injury and why brain cells die after trauma. The aim is to reduce the socioeconomic toll by developing better safety systems to prevent injuries and understanding the pathobiology to better treat brain injuries.
New York-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital is a Level 1 Regional Pediatric Trauma Center in New York City. Essential pediatric specialties are represented as well as injury research and prevention across an array of intentional and unintentional injuries.
Columbia SURGE - Scientific Union for the Reduction of Gun Violence (SURGE) is promoting more science and less violence through advancing scientific solutions that have been shown to reduce gun violence. SURGE actively recruits scientists and scholars from a broad range of disciplines and promotes investment and academic freedom for researchers studying gun violence.
Trauma-Free NYC is a Columbia University community partnership focused on preventing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and on mitigating the disadvantages that can be exacerbated by ACEs—the known effects of which include increased risk of substance abuse, depression and suicidality. Trauma-Free engages faculty, staff and students using a service learning model in their mission to serve communities with children and families impacted by ACE, stress and adversity.
